Who is responsible for all this suffering? The contractors who supply the animals for use in rodeos clearly play a role,
as do the contestants who vie for cash prizes. Sponsors of such events must also be held accountable. But the group most
responsible is the audience. As long as people are willing to pay money to attend rodeo events, they are perpetuating animal
cruelty. Please, boycott rodeos and encourage others to do the same.
Let’s face it: the rodeo is a form of violence masquerading
as entertainment. That its victims are not human makes it no less
violent. The entire rodeo environment encourages spectators and
rodeo participants alike to be insensitive to animal suffering and
accept inhumane treatment of the animal performers. As Matthew
Scully states in his recent book, Dominion, “If ever there were a
completely gratuitous abuse of animals, and often baby animals at that,
all done for the sheer thrill and bravado of it, it is rodeo.”
DaimlerChrysler Corporation sponsored many of the rodeos investigated.
Please write the company and demand that they end their sponsorship of rodeos and
adopt a humane and compassionate policy.
